September 23rd: The Declaration of Independence is coming to Vancouver
On Tues., Sept. 23, from 7 to 9 PM, the City of Vancouver, in partnership
with the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust, will host the
Declaration of Independence Road Trip, bringing one of the 25 remaining
broadside copies of the Declaration of Independence to Vancouver's Water
Resource Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way.
Festivities will begin promptly at 7PM with a brief welcome by Mayor
Royce Pollard. Also, Margie Wilson, a direct descendant of one of the
original signers, and Vancouver resident, will be on site giving a brief
interpretive history of the time when the Declaration was made. This
will be the first time, on the national tour, that a descendant of a
signer will be involved with the exhibit. Parking attendants will be
employed to assist in traffic control and admission to the event is

The Declaration of Independence comes to Vancouver through the support
of the Oregon Historical Society. The Oregon Historical Society is
hosting the national Declaration of Independence Road Trip from
September 20 through September 27. Admission is free. Oregon Historical
Society hours are Monday - Saturday 10AM - 5PM and Sunday 12PM -5PM.

September 25, 2003: Dava Sobel, "Moons and Measures: How Explorers Found Their Way."
Award-winning author Dava Sobel will kick off Lewis & Clark College's first
bicentennial symposium Unveiling the World in 1800 (www.thejourneycontinues.org/events.html), held at the New Mark
Theatre, Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available

Preserving Our History: Archival Techniques
This course provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn how to care for items of historical significance. During this one-day workshop simplified museum conservation/preservation methods will be demonstrated. Conservation materials readily available to the public will be discussed (including a discussion about where to easily get these supplies). Participants are encouraged to bring one item from their own collection for discussion. Range of discussion will be dependent on the interest of the participants. This workshop is not an evaluation or appraisal workshop.

Women's Voices From the Western Frontier
If you are interested in women's roles in the development of the western frontier, this is the workshop for you. Award winning scriptwriter and author Susan G. Butruille will return to Kelso for this one-day workshop. Through journals, songs, readings, and discussion she will bring to life the lives and experiences of the women who lived in the old West as well as those who braved the west-bound trails.

How To Do Oral History
Are you interested in documenting your family history or some other historical event? Oral history is a wonderful way to document events and make history come alive! Anyone interested in learning how to start, collect or publish an oral history is invited to attend this one-day workshop. Dr. Laurie Mercier, WSU-Vancouver History Professor, and Past President of the National Oral History Association will be leading the workshop. Please note: participants are asked to bring an audio cassette player and audiotape or some other kind of recording device (DAT machine) to the workshop.
