Engaging the American Past

Summer Institute

The Engaging the American Past Summer Institute is intended to give teachers the time and tools to learn more about key historical themes and topics, to collaborate with university faculty and other teachers, and to develop ways to improve student learning. It builds on the content presented in the Dinner Colloquia series, and leads to student engagement in history.

Each participating teacher will deepen and enrich their understanding of historical practice and pedagogy. Participants will develop one lesson plan (including evaluation tools) that they will teach to their students the following fall. They will also be asked to share their findings with other teachers through lesson plans, online interactions, presentations, and/or classroom video tapes. Participants are encouraged and expected to help develop this new program through their ideas, feedback, and leadership. Participants in the 2003 Summer Institute are encouraged to take part in future Engaging the American Past programs and activities, including the winter 2004 Dinner Colloquia Series.
