We the Diverse People: Cultural Encounters in the Pacific Northwest

Bruce Larson

"History-Driven Teaching Approaches: Inquiry-Based Learning, Writing Biography, and Using Primary Resources in the Elementary classroom"

Bruce Larson uses a three-part technique to approach to history-based learning. The integrated parts include: inquiry-based learning, use of primary sources, and biography writing. Through authentic instruction from the teacher, the students will be engaged in serious historical thinking. The initial inquiry-based project (based loosely on the scientific method) will engage the students mind and lead them to investigate primary sources in order to collect data. Now the students have enough information to begin to come up with a person from that time period to write a biography on. Through this process the students are able to tie together key events, as well as, key people within specific time periods. The three approaches come together into one whole system, which sets the stage for future inquiry.
