We the Diverse People: Cultural Encounters in the Pacific Northwest

Darrell Millner

"The United States Acquires the Pacific Northwest:

Liberty and the Louisiana Purchase"

Darrell Millner encourages us all to look at every side of historical transactions and investigate all members included in those events to get the true picture of history. The hidden black experience shown through the influences of the Haitian revolution, the Lewis and Clark expedition and the plight of the Oregon Trail presents the notion of how exploring both sides of a story can enrich the knowledge learned by inspecting than one perspective. Millner detailed the story of the George Bush, a black man who crossed the Oregon Trail and eventually settled in Centrailia, Washington. This exerpt from history brought to light issues within the Oregon State Constitution regarding the exclusion of free blacks, a vital part of Oregon history that many were not acquainted with.
