Marion Grassley and

Susan Anderson

"Thinking History, Doing History,

Learning History at the Elementary Level; The Odyssey Program"

Through their hard work within the Portland Public Schools, Marion and Susan have developed a program of learning that encompasses all subjects within a history-based framework. The students pick characters to be within a pioneer setting and through these characters, embark on many adventures of learning that use history as the thread that holds the adventure together. With the support of encouraging parents, the Odyssey program allows students to become fully involved with history through engaging their tactile senses and developing their minds in every way possible. The Odyssey Program materials are available for sharing with other schools wishing the embrace this method of inquiry.
